Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo

The palace of the Golfines de Abajo is a building located in the monumental precinct of the city of Cáceres, Spain.

It was built by the Golfín branch that settled in the city immediately after its reconquest.

Alonso Golfín, son of Pero Alonso Golfín, defender of the cause of Enrique IV, managed to get the Catholic Monarchs to grant him a licence to found an entailed estate for the benefit of his son, Sancho Paredes, which authorised the latter to establish another with his own assets and to add to those of his father. With the passing of time, an immense entailed estate of entire estates and possessions was created.

Linked to the estate of the Golfines was the manor house known as the Golfines de Abajo.

The works were undertaken in two phases: the first corresponds to the beginning of construction, around 1510 or 1511, on the same site as the manor house. The second phase points to its return to the city.

The towers are dissimilar. The volume of the tower on the left protrudes from the façade, while the tower on the right is taller and square in plan.

In gratitude for the family's numerous services to the Catholic Monarchs, the latter allowed them to place their coat of arms, the only one of its kind in Cáceres, on the façade of their palace. It is crowned by a cross on the marble mullion of the highest mullioned window of the main façade. The palace housed the Catholic monarchs on the two occasions that they visited the city.
