Antiguas Tenerías del Arrabal de San Segundo

The old tanneries of the suburb of San Segundo are located in the western area outside the walls of the city of Ávila, capital of the province of the same name, in Castilla y León. It is located on the right bank of the River Adaja downstream, in the area around the Romanesque church of San Segundo, in what was once the so-called suburb of San Segundo, made up of a group of domestic buildings, dedicated to craft production, located near the River Adaja, whose water was essential for the type of work that was carried out in this way.

Although there is archaeological evidence of human presence in the area of the suburb in Roman and Visigothic times, it is known that it was from the Middle Ages onwards that the area took on a notable importance linked to the presence of craft factories involved in the tanning of skins, dyeing and fulling mills. Some of these craft workshops were in operation until the 18th century.

From the ruins of this architectural complex dedicated to the tanning of hides, which was in operation from the 14th century until the end of the 17th century or the middle of the 18th century, several construction phases have been documented: from the earliest, from the 14th to the 16th century, several containers, remains of walls and floors remain; around the 16th century these structures were abandoned, and new tanning facilities were built over their remains, to which most of the remains uncovered belong. This new complex, with slight variations, lasted for about two centuries until it was finally abandoned and devoted to agricultural work, a use to which the site was put until the middle of the 20th century.

On 24 June 2010, they were declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of ethnological complex, by means of an agreement published in the Official Gazette of Castilla y León on the 30th of the same month.
