Plaza del Mercado Chico

The Plaza del Mercado Chico, the main square of Ávila, is located in the centre of the city, within the city walls.

It is a rectangular square with arcades on three sides. It is oriented on a NE-SW axis, with the Town Hall on the NE side, and opposite it the church of San Juan Bautista, on the side without arcades.

Some authors consider that it may have been the crossroads between the Decumanus and Cardo streets of the Roman city.

The first known square dates from the medieval period, possibly with arcades. The different guilds gathered around it, giving rise to streets with names such as "Pescadería", "Alhatería", "Zapateros", "Carnicerías" or "Cuchillería".

From the 18th century onwards, several renovation projects were carried out on the square, which were never completed.

Its current configuration dates from the 19th century and corresponds to a neoclassical project by Juan Antonio Cuervo, except for the Town Hall, which is the work of Ildefonso Vázquez de Zúñiga.

The sides of the square are built on three levels: a first level with semicircular arches on pillars and two upper levels in which brick predominates.

The façade of the Town Hall, mainly made of granite ashlars, consists of a first level of arches, a noble floor with a balcony and an upper level with two towers.
