Monfragüe National Park is one of the fifteen national parks in Spain.
It is located in the province of Cáceres, and is the first national park in Extremadura.
The park is crossed by two rivers, the Tagus and the Tiétar.
On 4 April 1979 it was declared a natural park. In 1988 it was declared an SPA and in July 2003 UNESCO recognised Monfragüe as a Biosphere Reserve.
The name comes from the name given by the Romans as mons fragorum (dense mountain).
In the small hermitage, next to the castle, the 17th-18th century carving of the Virgin of Montfragüe is kept, an image brought from Palestine by the knights of the Order of Santiago. She is the patron saint of Torrejón el Rubio, although she is also venerated in Serradilla, Malpartida de Plasencia and Riolobos, these villages come to 'Monte-Fragoso' to celebrate their pilgrimage, each village has a day.
Three main habitats predominate: Mediterranean woodland and scrubland, dehesas, rocky areas and bodies of water (rivers and reservoirs).
More than 200 species of vertebrates breed in the park, many others winter in the park or can be seen during their migration to other latitudes. Birds are the group of vertebrates with the greatest abundance of species and individuals.
