San Juan de los Reyes Monastery

The convent of San Juan de los Reyes is a monastery of the Spanish city of Toledo belonging to the Franciscan Order, which was built under the patronage of Queen Isabel I of Castile with the intention of turning it into a royal mausoleum, in commemoration of the battle de Toro and the birth of Prince Juan.

It is one of the most valuable examples of the Elizabethan Gothic style and the most important building erected by the Catholic Monarchs. The convent is also a monument commemorating the achievements of the Catholic Monarchs and their political program.

The monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, considered the most representative building of Toledo's Gothic style, was ordered to be built by the Catholic Monarchs under the direct patronage of the queen, to the point of being cited several times in the documentation as “monastery of San Juan de la Reina ».

Dedicated to Saint John in memory of King Don Juan his father, it was raised to commemorate the victory of Toro (1476) and the birth of Prince Don Juan (1478), as well as to create a collegiate church of canons that would serve as royal pantheon, according to Fray Pedro de Salazar, chronicler of the Franciscan order.

It is known that the architect of San Juan de los Reyes was Juan Guas. However, his name does not appear cited until 1853, after the discovery of an inscription located in the chapel of the church of San Justo y Pastor de Toledo. Until then, it will be considered anonymously authored and this is shown by the writings of authors such as Antonio Ponz or Magán, who will not mention the author of said work.

Various studies carried out by José María Azcárate Ristori in the years 1956 and 1958, show that from 1494 Juan Guas was in charge of the works, and his name appears linked to the master Egas Cueman, the two senior masters being between 1479 and 1485.
