Main Chapel

After Innocent X hired José de Vega y Verdugo as master builder, he commissioned a Baroque transformation of the great Romanesque chapel. Scenes from the life of the Apostle adorn the Renaissance pulpits on either side of the entrance, which were painted by Juan Bautista Celma in 1578. The dressing room is Baroque in style and features a baldachin propped up by angels from the 17th century. Domingo Antonio de Andrade constructed an altar over the Apostle's tomb and placed three statues of Santiago on it; inside the chapel is a statue of Santiago from the 13th century seated in polychrome stone, dressed as a pilgrim and wearing a silver cape adorned with large gemstones; one can climb up the back of the altar and perform the customary embrace of the saint. Four kings—Alfonso II, Ramiro I, Fernando el Católico, and Felipe IV—honor Santiago with equestrian statues atop the tabernacle. Finally, there is an illustration of one of the four cardinal virtues—wisdom, justice, courage, or temperance—in each corner. The silver used to make the altar's facade, the tabernacle, the display stand, and the figure of the Immaculate Conception came from a donation by Archbishop Antonio Monroy of Mexico.
