Puente de Enrique Estevan

The Enrique Estevan Bridge, also known as the New Bridge, is one of the bridges that crosses the River Tormes in Salamanca. Construction began in 1902 and after numerous interruptions it was inaugurated on 22 October 1913. It replaced the Roman or old bridge. It is named after the Salamanca city councillor who promoted the project for a new bridge for Salamanca, managing to avoid the modifications that were planned for the old Roman bridge.

In 1891, the Directorate of Roads proposed the extension of the Roman Bridge of Salamanca, with cantilevers to widen it and allow its use by the new means of transport: the automobile. Thanks to the efforts of councillor Enrique Estevan Santos, it was finally decided to build a new bridge upstream. Work on the bridge was approved on 7th August 1900 and began in 1902 on the design of the civil engineer Saturnino Zufiarre. On 15th September 1902, the ceremony to lay the first stone took place, which consisted of a time capsule inside which was a copy of El Adelanto from that date, together with other significant elements of the period in Salamanca. The construction company in charge was Duro Felguera.

It was the fourth bridge over the Tormes in Salamanca, after the Roman bridge and two railway bridges, and actually the fifth bridge in Salamanca if we take into account the Soto bridge, over the Santo Domingo stream.

The bridge was illuminated in 1998, providing an artistic night view.

On 14 January 2016 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Junta de Castilla y León.

It is a century-old metal bridge, which has six arches of about 43 metres. Each of them is supported by thick granite pillars.
