Iglesia de Santiago del Arrabal

The church of Santiago del Arrabal is a Catholic temple located on the banks of the river Tormes in the city of Salamanca. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, being one of the oldest in Salamanca. It is located in the vicinity of the Roman bridge of Salamanca and of the stone rafter (the so-called verraco del puente). It is one of the churches near the Ruta de la Plata (Silver Route) before the entrance to the city on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The interior is completely Baroque due to the transformations and renovations carried out in the 18th century. The church was important in the celebrations of the feast of St. James in which the representatives of the town council came on horseback preceded by a herald with a flag.

It was founded in 1145 as a Mozarabic church and was located in the suburb, outside the walls.

It is a brick church. Originally of Romanesque-Mudejar exterior design, the reforms undertaken between 1951 and 1965, directed by the Valladolid architect Anselmo Arenillas, completely changed its exterior appearance, to the point that some authors, such as Professor José Ramón Nieto, state that "such was the architectural intervention carried out in the 1950s that practically nothing remains of the old", indicating that Arenillas "invented a new building after removing the tower, changing the entrances, rebuilding the apses and the internal and external walls, erecting a new dome and a stone belfry, etc. Observing the final work, hardly any remains of the previous church can be seen. On the other hand, due to the alterations that were made to the interior in the 18th century, it has a baroque style, with three apses.
