The church or chapel of Los Remedios is an intramural chapel located in the district of San Dionisio.
Next to it is the Chapel of the Lord of the Royal Gate, a very well known chapel, which is popularly known as the Chapel of the Remedies and the Chapel of the Lord of the Royal Gate.
The original chapel dates back to the time after the Reconquest, when Jerez was under siege by Moorish armies. In 1517 the brotherhood of Nuestra Señora Santa María de los Remedios was founded in this chapel. After the foundation of the organisation, the brothers built a main chapel on the present site. The current Gospel nave was then a hospital ward of Juan Grande, known as the hospital of Los Remedios until the latter integrated them into the hospital of Candelaria in the current Alameda Cristina. In the middle of the 17th century the church was enlarged again, and the current façade was built in 1654.
The brotherhood was dissolved in the 18th century and the chapel was closed to worship in 1868, reopening in the mid-20th century.
Attached to the Church of Los Remedios is the chapel of the Señor de la Puerta Real, well known for being in a busy area in the centre of the city, between the Plaza del Arenal and the Plaza de la Yerba, on the same street as the Town Hall of Jerez.
In the past there was an image of the Virgin with her Son in her arms which was called Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies). Nowadays there is a Calvary of important artistic value.
