Basílica de Santa María del Coro

The basilica of Santa María del Coro is a baroque style basilica completed in 1774 and located at the intersection of 31 de Agosto and Mayor streets in the "Old Town" of San Sebastián.

Baroque in style, it has, however, Gothic, Churrigueresque and neoclassical elements and has a beautiful Baroque portico with Rococo elements.

Its façade and main entrance are aligned with the Buen Pastor Cathedral, creating an axis formed by the continuation of Calle Mayor, which after the Boulevard has become Calle Hernani and, later on, Calle Loyola.

The construction works began in 1743 from the project of the architects Pedro Ignacio Lizardi and Miguel de Salazar, building on an old Gothic church from the 12th and 13th centuries, whose plan and orientation it preserved.

Viewing the basilica from the outside, it is important to highlight the main portal, located between the two towers as an altarpiece, and on which we can see the martyred figure of Saint Sebastian, the papal symbols that give it the category of minor basilica and coat of arms of the city crowning the building.

The main nave consists of a room measuring 48 by 33 m, divided into three naves, which in turn can be divided into 4 zones, with the pillars of the nave as axes. Six pillars and the walls with pillars as buttresses support the vaults. The octagonal pillars reach up to their capitals a height of 15 m, the central vault being the largest with a height of more than 27 m.

Towards the back of the nave and on the right side there are different rooms that are for the use of the parish offices or other services (daily chapel, sacristies, engine rooms, warehouses and other uses).

The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin of the Choir who is, together with Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the city. The image of the Virgin is a wood carving of about 40 cm that can be dated between the XV-XVI centuries. The sweetness of her expression and her dark complexion stand out. Saint Sebastian is also present both on a canvas on the main altar, a work by Luis Boccia from 1819, and on a sculpture on the façade.

Also in the interior, the set of classicist style that make up the central and lateral altarpieces, which are the work of Diego de Villanueva and Francisco Azurmendi, is remarkable.

At the foot of the church is the choir, connected by a staircase. It highlights a semicircular stalls, the work of Francisco Bocente y Mendía, and the excellent romantic Cavaillé-Coll organ from 1863, whose façade corresponds to that of an old Baroque organ.
