The Plaza de la Independencia, also known as Plaza Grande, is the main historical and political symbol of Quito. Located in the old part of the city, at 2818 meters above sea level, it stands as the main square of the capital and an essential reference point in the history of the country. In its center is the Monument to Independence, a commemorative work dedicated to the heroes who promoted the First Cry of Hispano-American Independence on August 10, 1809.
The square is surrounded by emblematic buildings such as the Carondelet Palace, presidential seat; the Metropolitan Cathedral, which represents the religious authority; the Archbishop's Palace; and the Municipal Palace, which houses the offices of the city council. It also has other historic buildings, including the Casa de los Alcaldes, the Palacio de la Curia Metropolitana and the Palacio de Pizarro, now known as Hotel Plaza Grande.
From its beginnings in the 17th century as an esplanade of rammed earth with a central fountain to supply the neighbors, the square has witnessed important transformations. During the colonial period, it was used as a marketplace, the scene of festivities and a center of social life. In the 19th century, under the influence of President Gabriel García Moreno, it was redesigned as a Frenchified park with gardens, railings and gates reflecting the European style.
In 1906, President Eloy Alfaro and the mayor of Quito inaugurated the Monument to Independence in an event that also marked the official renaming of the plaza. Since then, it became an architectural model replicated in other Ecuadorian cities. In the 1940s, the gates and gates were removed to open access to the public, consolidating the square as a meeting place and symbol of identity for the people of Quito.
Today, the Plaza de la Independencia remains a central place in the political, social and cultural life of Quito, with a rich history that combines its colonial past, its role in the country's independence and its evolution as a public space that connects citizens with their historical heritage.
