The Municipal Palace of Quito, located on the eastern side of the Plaza de la Independencia in the Historic Center of the city, is the headquarters of the Municipality of the Metropolitan District. Its modernist architecture seeks to harmonize with the historicist style buildings that surround it, standing out as an emblematic point of the area.
The current building was erected due to the age and limitations of the old Municipal Palace of the 19th century. In 1962, during the administration of Julio Moreno, the original palace and several neighboring houses were demolished, leaving a lot that remained unoccupied for years. In 1970, under the direction of Mayor Jaime del Castillo and with the support of businessman Carlos Mantilla Jácome, the construction of the new building was promoted, whose planning was the responsibility of architects Diego Banderas Vela and Juan Espinosa Páez, and engineers Jaime Brio Vaca and José Chacón Toral. The work was completed in 1973 during the mayoralty of Sixto Durán-Ballén.
Currently, the palace houses the offices of the Metropolitan Mayor, the offices of the 21 councilors, the General Administration, the Metropolitan Attorney's Office, the General Secretariat of the Council and the Secretariat of Communication. In November 2016, the building was the scene of the state funeral of Sixto Durán-Ballén, former President of the Republic and former Mayor of Quito, with a funeral chapel installed in the City Hall as part of his farewell.
