The Royal Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Guadiana River as it passes through Badajoz, the fourth bridge to be built in the city on the extension of Avenida Sinforiano Madroñero, located downstream from the existing bridges (Autonomía, Palmas and Universidad) and which has become a symbol of modern Badajoz.
It was inaugurated in December 1994, after two years of work and since their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain laid the first stone in September 1992.
It weighs 320 tonnes and has a span of 452 metres. It is the widest of the four, at 23 m, which not only allows four lanes and the corresponding pavements, but also special lanes for bicycles.
The most striking feature is the high central pylon, in the shape of an "A", which is more than 80 m high and can be seen from several points in the city.
The cable stay starts at the top of the pylon and supports the bridge deck with 28 polyethylene-coated steel braces in a fan-shaped arrangement, the shape of which (when viewed from a distance) resembles a gigantic harp.
Adequate lighting produces a spectacular night vision, doubling its image in the calm waters of the river.
