Paseo del Malecón

The Paseo del Malecón is a structure in the city of Murcia (Region of Murcia, Spain) that was built to protect against floods from the Segura River before being transformed into a promenade above the city's surrounding orchard. It is recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest and one of the symbols of Murcia's capital.

Starting from the Plano de San Francisco and continuing into the former market gardens of the La Arboleja neighbourhood, the promenade, which is three metres above ground level, encircles the city on its western side for more than 1.5 kilometres.

Since the beginning of time, people have utilised it as a place to relax, saunter, and rest because it was constructed as a link between the city and the nearby orchards. The Malecón hosts food stands (barracas during the Spring Festivals and Los Huertos during the September Fair), craft markets, and live music during the city's two biggest holiday celebrations, the Murcia Fair and the Murcia Fair.

It was constructed in the 15th century as a flood retaining wall to stop floods from the Guadalentn, which until the construction of the Reguerón canal flowed into the Segura upstream from Murcia, from damaging the old neighbourhoods of San Antoln and San Andrés and consequently the rest of the city, as well as the meandering of the Segura river to the west of the city.

Then, in 1736, Francisco de Luján y Arce repaired it as a result of the damage caused by rain and horse traffic (as it was already being utilised as a promenade).

Its primary purpose as a flood control dike has been successful throughout history, since it was not breached even in the Santa Teresa flood of 1879. The size of the flood, however, had an impact on the city's centre because the roaring waves arrived through other locations.

In 1982, the Paseo del Malecón was designated as a historical and aesthetic landmark. It was given the category of Asset of Cultural Interest in 1985 after the Spanish Historical Heritage Law was approved.

As a result of the promenade's and its surroundings' severe deterioration in recent years, numerous associations are working to restore it as well as to gather the collective memory of the locals in this iconic location through various contributions, including photographs, stories, poems, press articles, historical details, and any other kind of information that will increase the value of this special location.
