The Pia Almoina is a building located next to the steps of Santa Maria Cathedral. It was built in the 13th century to house the Pia Almoina, a charitable institution linked to the Cathedral. It is currently the territorial headquarters of the College of Architects of Catalonia.
The building, in Gothic style, is one of the most notable buildings in Girona: it is on the register of Cultural Assets of National Interest of the Catalan heritage and is also listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest of the Spanish heritage.
It was established in Girona in 1228 by the canon Arnau d'Escales, who also donated three houses of his own, next to the Cathedral. Bishop Guillem de Cabanelles had the building erected in 1238, with property he inherited from Jaume of Aragon, son of the Duke of Gandia.
The construction grew between 1415 and 1421 with the purchase of the neighbouring buildings in the old Jewish quarter. At the end of the 18th century, as a result of the confiscation of pious works decreed by Charles IV, the building was sold to several private buyers. Subsequently, in 1856, it passed into the hands of the Escolapias sisters to be used as a school, a function it retained until the 1970s. Between 1973 and 1983, the architects Jeroni Moner, Benet Cervera and Arcadi Pla renovated the building to convert it into the headquarters of the Girona branch of the College of Architects of Catalonia.
