Construction of the Passion façade began in 1956, following excavations in 1954, following Gaudí's designs. The towers were completed in 1976, followed by a decorative process that concluded in 2018 with the installation of the triumphal cross and the empty Sepulchre group. Gaudí devised this façade in 1911 during his convalescence from Malta fever in Puigcerdà, with the final sketch drawn in 1917. The façade is dedicated to the Passion of Jesus and seeks to represent his suffering at the crucifixion as the redemption of human sins. Gaudí therefore conceived a more sober and simplified facade, without ornamentation, emphasizing the nakedness of the stone, resembling a skeleton delineated by the simple lines of its bones. Only the sculptural groups of the Passion Cycle of Jesus, designed by Josep Maria Subirachs, appear on this façade. Subirachs created a set of angular and schematic forms to intensify the dramatic effect, completing his work between 1987 and 2009.
