The Gloria façade, of imposing dimensions, will serve as the main entrance to the central nave. Its construction began in 2002. This façade is dedicated to the heavenly Glory of Jesus and symbolizes the ascension to God, representing Death, the Last Judgment, Glory and Hell, as a consequence of disobedience to God. Gaudí outlined only the general guidelines for this façade, foreseeing that it would be his successors who would complete it after his lifetime.
Access to the Portico of Glory will be via a wide staircase, where the Monument to Fire and Water will be located. The former will take the form of a great flaming candelabra, symbolizing the pillar of fire that guided the chosen people, while the latter will take the form of a fountain of water that will be broken down into four cascades, representing the rivers of paradise and the fountains of living water of the Apocalypse.
The staircase will trace a subway passage on Mallorca Street, evoking Hell and corruption, adorned with figures of demons, idols, false gods, religious divisions, heresies and other emblems of evil. It will also display purgatory and tombs on the atrium floor symbolizing death. In honor of the condemnation to work originated by the original sin, the main front will house representations of different professions: tailor, shoemaker, bricklayer, baker, blacksmith, potter, carpenter, among others. Through effort and virtue, the human being can reach Glory, through redemption mediated by the Holy Spirit. For this reason, the portico will be flanked by seven columns, each one symbolizing a gift of the Holy Spirit. At the bases of the columns will be the seven deadly sins and at their capitals, the seven virtues.
