Cordoba's historic center is one of the largest and most valuable in Europe. In 1984, Unesco declared its emblematic mosque-cathedral a World Heritage Site, and in 1994 extended this recognition to a large part of the old town. This area preserves an impressive architectural legacy, with visible traces of the Roman, Islamic and Christian cultures that have marked its history.
The layout of the historic center follows, to a large extent, the route of the old wall, which has allowed it to remain almost intact in the face of the great urban expansions of the 19th and 20th centuries. Around this nucleus, wide avenues have been developed - such as Conde Vallellano, Paseo de la Victoria, Ronda de los Tejares or Avenida de las Ollerías - forming a ring of open spaces, thus protecting the historic heart of Cordoba and reinforcing its unique and monumental character.
