The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, usually known as the Niemeyer Centre, is a cultural centre designed by the Brazilian Óscar Niemeyer.
Built next to the Avilés estuary, it contrasts with the old quarter of the town and the traditional industrial image of the area thanks to its curved lines and predominantly white colour. It is one of Niemeyer's few works in Europe and the only one in Spain, having been designed a few years after receiving the Prince of Asturias Award.
During the month of March 2021, the centre celebrated the 10th anniversary of its opening with a series of events that were complemented during the year.
Its facilities include the square, the auditorium, the dome, the tower and the multi-purpose and administrative building.
The Niemeyer Centre hosts different types of artistic and cultural events, and numerous national and international artists from different fields (plastic arts, theatre, cinema, photography, literature...) have passed through its facilities.
