Confitería Ideal, known simply as La Ideal, is a prominent bar located at 384 Suipacha Street, in downtown Buenos Aires. It is famous for its exuberant and well-preserved interior decoration, dating back to the 1910s.
Inaugurated in 1912 on the same premises, the two-story building was designed by engineer C. F. González, at the request of its founder, Galician merchant Manuel Rosendo Fernández. Fernández invested a considerable sum to establish a restaurant and confectionery that would become a "Café Notable", recognized among the best gastronomic enterprises of the first decades of the 20th century.
One of its floors housed one of the first ice cream factories in Buenos Aires. Over time, its descendants transformed the second floor into a milonga hall in the 1970s. La Ideal has been a meeting point for high society, a tango lounge and, eventually, a stage for electronic music parties. However, the quality of the place deteriorated, and the descendants of Rosendo Fernandez sold it in 2016. The new owners closed the confitería in 2017 to undertake a significant restoration, successfully reopening it on November 16, 2022, under the direction of the architectural firm Pereiro, Cerrotti & Asociados.
The building stands out for its materials and elements imported from Europe, such as French chandeliers, Czechoslovakian armchairs, Italian stained glass, hand-carved Slavonian oak boiserie, marbles, beveled glass, bronzes and black iron.
La Confiteria Ideal has received illustrious visitors such as Maurice Chevalier, Vittorio Gassman, Maria Felix, James Peace, Robert Duvall and Yoko Ono, who expressed her desire to preserve the history and culture of the place. Scenes from Alan Parker's "Evita" and Carlos Saura's "Tango" were filmed there. In addition, former Argentine presidents such as Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear, Hipólito Yrigoyen and Arturo Frondizi frequented La Ideal or ordered food there.
