Iglesia de Santiago de Villafranca del Bierzo

The church of Santiago Apóstol is a Catholic parish church located in Villafranca del Bierzo, in the region of El Bierzo, province of León, Spain. It is a rectangular building with a single nave, covered with a barrel vault, to which a Baroque chapel and a side sacristy were added in the eighteenth century.

In 2015, during the extension of the Ways of St. James in Spain recognized by UNESCO under the name "Ways of St. James of Compostela: French Way and Ways of Northern Spain", Spain presented a document entitled "Retrospective Inventory - Associated Elements". In this inventory, the church of Santiago appears as element number 1883.

The church has a rectangular nave covered by a barrel vault, with a semicircular apse that includes three windows decorated with the Romanesque technique of taqueado jaqués. It also has two doorways:

The Main Doorway is located on the west façade, it consists of a semicircular arch without columns or decoration. Above the door, one of the windows that illuminate the interior, and at the top, a belfry with two openings, added later to the original construction of the church.

The Door of Forgiveness opens only in the Jacobean years, allowing pilgrims who cannot reach the tomb of the Apostle Santiago, due to health problems, to obtain the Jubilee. According to tradition, this privilege was granted by Popes Calixtus III and Urban II in 1122. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the door was walled up as a measure of protection against pests and looting.
