The Sanctuary of Santa María la Real del Cebreiro is a Catholic church located in the parish of O Cebreiro, in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, in the region of Ancares.
Founded by the Count of Aurillac, it was initially part of a monastery. It is one of the oldest monuments on the French Way of St. James, linked to the legend of the Holy Grail, which is reflected in the coat of arms of Galicia.
Pre-Romanesque in style, its origin dates back to the 9th century. The church has a rectangular floor plan with a gabled roof. Its facade, rebuilt in later times, has three naves separated by pillars and ending in a triple chancel. Among the treasures of the temple is an 18th century baptismal font, a 12th century chalice and objects donated by Isabella the Catholic during her visit in 1486.
The sanctuary is surrounded by oral traditions, among which it is mentioned that the monks used to ring a bell to guide pilgrims during foggy days. Another legend relates the miracle of a neighbor who attended mass regardless of weather conditions. One day, upon receiving the Eucharist, the bread and wine turned into real flesh and blood. The anthropomorphic tombs in the church supposedly belong to the priest and the peasant who were the protagonists of this miracle.
