Santa María de Cardet

The church of Santa Maria de Cardet, also known as Santa Maria de les Cabanasses, is the parish church of the small village of Cardet, located in the Boí valley. It is a Romanesque construction from the 12th century, with some modifications introduced in the 18th century. It is part of a group of rural churches in the Romanesque-Lombard style that are scattered throughout the valley and share the same architectural tradition.

The building is located at the end of the urban nucleus, on a ravine that conditions its structure. For this reason, the apse is higher than usual compared to other churches in the valley. Externally, the decoration follows the canons of Lombard Romanesque, with a repertoire of blind arches, friezes of angles and Lombard bands. In the apse there are four windows with double semicircular arches, which bring luminosity to the interior.

The main doorway opens on the western wall and is topped by a belfry with three openings, intended to house the bells. On the keystone of the arch there is a trinitarian chrism carved in stone, circular in shape and of the Huesca type. It is a rustic and irregular piece, in which the tilde is placed under the P; the letters alpha and omega are represented in a very small form, while the letter S occupies a disproportionate size. This symbolism responds to the usual iconographic language of the Romanesque, in which the chrism represents Christ as the beginning and the end.

The church was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1992 and, together with the other churches in the valley, was inscribed in 2000 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the group of Catalan Romanesque churches in the Boí Valley.

Inside is preserved the Gothic image of the Mare de Déu de les Cabanasses, dating from the fourteenth century and object of special local devotion. The original Romanesque altar had a painted frontal that today is in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia. This work, of great iconographic value, represents the Virgin in the center, inside a mandorla and surrounded by the Tetramorphos, symbol of the evangelists. The main scene is accompanied by episodes of the Virgin's life, such as the Assumption, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Epiphany and the Flight into Egypt, all executed in tempera panel painting.
