The architect Gaspar de Solórzano started construction on this church sometime between 1490 and 1496, and it was finished in 1516. Although the tower is Baroque and was created by Pedro de Sierra, it can be framed in Gothic architecture. The church features three naves that are each vaulted in ribs. The main altarpiece within is striking; Gaspar Becerra started construction on it, but after his death, Juan de Juni finished it. After he passed away, Esteban Jordán assumed control of the altarpiece's construction, which was finished in 1590.
The church organ, which Francisco Ortega constructed in 1732, is another significant component.
The Chapel of the Conception, also known as the Chapel of the Benavente family and the work of the Corral de Villalpando brothers, is of particular significance inside the cathedral of Santa Mara and is regarded as the Sistine Chapel of Castile. Lvaro Alfonso de Benavente gave the order to construct it in 1543 so that he might bury his family there. It is regarded as having superb construction and features artwork by Juan de Juni and Jerónimo Corralde.
