Ribalta Park is one of the only public parks in the centre of Castellón de la Plana. It is one of the most representative areas of the city.
The configuration of the complex began in the 19th century, when the city began to industrialise. It was built on the initiative of the City Council, to offer train travellers the sensation of economic power in the city. It was built on the site of the old Calvario cemetery, and from the very beginning it was dedicated to Ribalta (a Catalan painter, who was believed to have been born in Castellón). In 1876, the Town Hall extended the park on land ceded by Count Pestagua, which was first called Alameda Park, and later Obelisk Park.
The park has now been modified with the location of the Castellón trolleybus or electric bus lane.
The Ribalta Park itself has an elongated triangular outline, adjoining the road to Morella. The project was drawn up by Lluís Alfonso. It is structured in two triangles joined by a promenade. La Pergola was built in the circle inscribed in the larger triangle. Originally, it was a pergola, with a recreational house and a pond around it. A few years ago, the old La Pergola complex was demolished and a multi-purpose building was constructed.
