The Plaza Mayor is the most important place in the city of Castellón de la Plana, as the main monuments of the capital are located there.
From the first moment of the foundation of Castellón, the Plaza Mayor was found in the same location (although with a different arrangement of its components. In the current site of the Town Hall, the first Christian cemetery was located, and in the centre, where the fountain now stands, there used to be a Laurel tree. During the fiestas, it was the venue for bullfights, mascletás, altars, flower offerings, shows of all kinds and demonstrations.
Its main buildings of interest are "El Fadrí", which is a bell tower, exempt from the co-cathedral and property of the Town Hall; the Co-cathedral of Santa María la Mayor, the most important religious centre in Castellón; the Central Market, built in the 40s of the last century, its main façade and the old part of it are of interest and the Town Hall, the most important building (politically speaking) in the city, the pink building on the side, houses the dependencies of the Town Hall.
The fountain in the Plaza Mayor is also a great cultural icon of the city, even having a song and celebrations on its big birthdays.
