Drago Milenario

Known as Drago Milenario de Icod de los Vinos, it is a huge specimen of dragon tree (Dracaena draco) declared a National Monument in 1917.

The dragon tree is an arboreal plant belonging to the group of Monocotyledons that has an anomalous secondary growth. It is therefore a woody herbaceous, rather than strictly "tree".

At present it is the largest and longest known in the world of its kind. It is about 18 meters high and has a perimeter at the base of the trunk of twenty meters and more than three hundred main branches.

The flowers are small and numerous, they have 6 petals and as many stamens of a creamy green or very pale yellow tone and are clustered in showy inflorescences that protrude from the leaf set. It is estimated that in years of good flowering it can produce up to 1,500 bouquets of flowers.

The trunk has a huge cavity that rises up to 6 meters in height, which is accessed through a door.

In 1985, a deep cleaning was carried out and a fan was installed inside the trunk to facilitate air circulation and prevent the proliferation of fungi.

The age of the dragon tree has been much discussed over time, being considered in the past in more than 3,000 years, although no study has been able to confirm this longevity, being the most reliable the one that gives the Dragon tree of Icod an estimated age of about 700 years with a possibility of failure of about 100 or 150 years.

This is because it is very difficult to accurately detail the age of a dragon tree since it is a woody herbaceous, not strictly speaking a tree, and therefore the dragon tree does not produce rings or renew its bark in a cyclical way. When it reaches an arboreal size, there are parts of the plant that develop for decades while others, for example, rot or break, and therefore, the measurements that in other trees would offer a very clear sample, in the dragon tree the measurements can only be considered as the age where one of its parts developed, which is information that has to be compared with other measurements and with other complex studies of the specimen, such as the density of its branches.
