Tower of Homage

This tower, located at the highest point of the fortress, is the largest of the towers on this front, with a height ranging between 22 and 26 meters. During the 14th century, along with the Vela tower, it stood as one of the primary defensive bastions of the Alhambra, providing solid protection to the enclosure. Internally, it has six discernible levels. It is believed that Al-Ahmar, the founder of the Alhambra, established his residence in this tower when he made the decision to build his palace. The tower is divided vertically into two distinct areas: a lower area comprises the first two levels, accessed through the north wall; the upper area comprises the remaining levels and can be accessed from the north wall and the east wall parapet. The upper level probably served as a center of defensive operations for the commanders of the enclosure, while the lower level was used as a dungeon for storing grain, salt and spices.
