Palacio y Granja de Schloss Hof

The largest of the Marchfeld, this palace was purchased by Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1726. The original castle was smaller, but was fundamentally enlarged to a baroque castle by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt in 1729. It was always used as a summer palace. It was inherited to his niece Maria Anna Victoria of Savoy-Carignano, but she lost it in her divorce with Joseph of Saxe-Hildburghausen.

It was later acquired by Maria Theresa in 1755 and she built an additional flat. It became part of the imperial apartments. In April 1766, Archduchess Maria Christina, Maria Theresa's favourite daughter, was married in the palace chapel.

During the reign of Franz Joseph, the palace was transferred to the Austro-Hungarian army as a training camp.

During World War II it was occupied by the German armed forces, and at the end of the war it was housed by the Red Army.

It was restored in preparation for the 1986 National Exhibition. In 2006, in preparation for the German Presidency in 2007, the renovation was extended.

The palace contains many original furnishings that show the splendour of the time.

Moreover, the garden consists of seven terraces that slope eastwards down to the River March, an idea also attributed to Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt.
