Campo de San Francisco

The Campo de San Francisco is an urban park located in the centre of the city of Oviedo. It is one of the most emblematic places in the city, and one of the largest urban parks in Asturias. It is also a regular venue for numerous cultural events and activities.

Having its origins in the orchards of the now disappeared Convent of San Francisco, inside the park you can distinguish several promenades and avenues: the Paseo de los Álamos, the Paseo del Bombé, the Paseo de José Cuesta, the Avenida Italia and the Avenida Alemania, among others. It has a pond and numerous well-known monuments such as the statue of Mafalda or José Tartiere.

In the vicinity of the park you can visit numerous points of interest, such as the Botanical Garden, the Snail Fountain, the Music Kiosk or the Mafalda Statue.

It should be taken into consideration that, of the 90,000 square metres that the Campo de San Francisco has, some 55,000 are green areas, in which the 955 specimens of trees, of 51 different species and more than 100 varieties, stand out. The most abundant are horse chestnuts, lime trees, shade plane trees and maples; but there are also poplars, ashes, holm oaks, laurels, magnolias, crateagus, plamaces and credos among others. Some of these trees are around 300 years old, and others are characterised by their height, as is the case with the shade plane tree, which is over 40 metres high.

The Campo de San Francisco is home to a series of statues dedicated to characters closely linked to the people of Oviedo. The statues were made by various artists over the decades and have been placed in representative spots in the countryside so that they can be contemplated by locals and visitors alike in an artistic and natural atmosphere.
