ROOM - IN FRONT OF THE FONTÁN MAP

In this room is one of the best known objects in the house. It is the Geometric Chart of Galicia or Fontán Map, a map printed in 1834. It is the first scientific map of Galicia, the first to provide a real image of the territory, the first to be made in Spain using mathematical measurements. Its creator was Domingo Fontán, who travelled around Galicia on horseback for 17 years in order to finish it.

Otero Pedrayo, the great geographer of Galicia, the main scholar of our territory and our landscape, saw in it a symbol of the country. He owned at least two specimens. In 1947, he took one of them to Buenos Aires, on a trip he made at the invitation of the city's Galician Centre. It is currently in the Galician Centre, hanging in the offices of the directors, very close to a box containing soil from the four Galician provinces.

In Galician literature, the scene in which the dying uncle of Adrián Solovio, the main character of Alrededor de sí, asks him to light a candle on the geographical chart of Fontán, the first objective and contrasted representation of the Galician territory, towns and villages, is very famous. The young man discovers that he cannot do it easily, that he does not know where some places are, that he does not know, in short, his land. The realisation of this reality will lead him to rethink his life and take an interest in what is his own.

In this room there is also El soto de los gatos, a watercolour that Castelao gave Otero Pedrayo, on the trip already mentioned, in Buenos Aires, the last time they saw each other.
