Puente Zubizuri

Zubizuri, also known as the Campo de Volantín pedestrian bridge, although popularly called the Calatrava bridge, is an arched bridge over the Nervión estuary.

It joins Campo de Volantín (Castaños), on the right bank, with Uribitarte (El Ensanche), on the left.

It was designed by the Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, who also directed the project to renovate the Bilbao Airport. The works began in 1990 and it was inaugurated on May 30, 1997.

The design consists of an inclined arch that joins two platforms, with access ramps and stairs on both banks, which supports the pedestrian structure with iron cables. The entire bridge is painted white, as is common among Calatrava structures.

Since its inauguration, almost simultaneously with that of the Guggenheim Museum, the Zubizuri was a symbol of the new Bilbao, constituting one more tourist element of the Paseo de la Ría.

It is a common walk for guests of the Campo de Volantín hotels before reaching the aforementioned museum.

The bridge is locally known for its highly slippery glass surface incompatible with the city's humid climate. As a provisional solution, it was initially chosen to add non-slip strips on the glazed tiles, later being tested experimentally with new tiles of special transparent and anti-fall glass, to finally cover the bridge with a non-slip mat.
