Peñón de Ifach

The Peñón de Ifach Natural Park is a natural park located in Calpe, in the province of Alicante, Spain1.

This site was declared a natural park by the Valencian government on 19 January 1987, with a surface area of 45 hectares. Subsequently, on 2 April 2015, the protection limit was extended to 53.3 hectares. It is located in the Marina Alta region, in the north of the province of Alicante, in the municipality of Calpe.

The park is located on an isolated rocky outcrop on the north coast of the province of Alicante, constituting one of the last foothills of the Betic mountain ranges and reaching an altitude of 332 metres. This enormous limestone mass slopes steeply down to the sea and is connected to the mainland by a detrital isthmus. Due to its physical characteristics, it is a third-order geodesic vertex, which was once used for the triangulation of Spain. There is a hiking route that leads to the top of the Peñón de Ifach. From there there are very good views of the Mediterranean and on clear days it is possible to make out the island of Formentera, Ibiza and the cape of Santa Pola.

The park is a refuge for birds such as the shag, the yellow-legged gull, the gannet, Eleonora's falcon, the peregrine falcon and the pale swift.

As in the rest of the Marina Alta, it is notable for its richness in species of terrestrial pulmonate molluscs (snails). Also of interest is the presence of beetles and particularly its bird colonies. Some 80 different species of birds have been recorded, including nesting, migratory and wandering birds. The presence of the Eleonora falcon, the shag and starlings is particularly noteworthy. Pallid swifts, yellow-legged gulls and kestrels nest there. Rock thrushes take advantage of any crevice, hole or ledge to make their nests. Birds of prey and the abundant gulls make their nests on the cliffs of the sunny southern wall. At their feet, the fallen cliffs serve as roosts for cormorants and gulls.
