Olores de advertencia o peligro

We are now entering the bathroom corridor, and the first thing you see is the table with the toxic smells, indicated by a skull: acetone, ammonia and tobacco.

On the top panel, it is explained how we can identify dangerous elements through smell without having to get very close or taste them. In fact, smell is used in many products to generate rejection or alarm, as in the case of butane. This is why smell also serves to save us from danger.

Oenological visit:

In this case the aroma of tobacco does not indicate danger, it is of a burnt tobacco, already ashes;
but we can find aromas of dark tobacco in amontillados and the aroma of blond tobacco or pipe tobacco in
blond tobacco or pipe tobacco sometimes as a primary aroma, very present in the pinotage variety, but mainly of the
pinotage, but mainly of tertiary origin, present in red varieties of high aromatic concentration and with great affinity to barrel ageing. It is frequently found in good barrel-aged whites or evolved sweet wines.

ODOUR FOR THE DETECTION OF NOXIOUS OR HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

This concept is very broad and refers to multiple situations: the presence in the air of vapours, irritating, toxic or explosive gases, etc.
Londe, in 1829, wrote: "In the natural state, substances which are repugnant to smell and taste are harmful to the human body. Exposed to deleterious emanations, without the sense of smell, man would be unaware of the risks he runs and would be mortally wounded, without knowing how it came to befall him".

Many authors point to the capacity of olfactory sensation in the detection of potentially dangerous, and more specifically explosive, substances in the environment.

Nowadays, the detection of the presence of domestic gas in the environment has acquired great importance due to the increasingly frequent occurrence of accidents caused by its explosion. The main constituent of natural gas, methane, is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, capable of forming explosive mixtures in air within a wide range of concentrations. Therefore, the development of the use of natural gas led to the need to find a method for its detection. Thus, studies on odorisation of natural gas began in the United States. A good odorant for gas is one that has the best physical, chemical, physiological and economic characteristics or properties. Currently, the most commonly used are THT, mercaptans, methyl sulphide, etc. However, none of them can be considered as an ideal agent, so research into future and better odorants is still ongoing.
