The Paseo del Príncipe de Vergara or also popularly known as Paseo del Espolón is the most emblematic square in the city of Logroño.
In addition to having been the physical center of the city for many years, it is currently its financial center.
It has historical monuments such as the Monument to General Espartero, walks and gardens with a varied and well-cared flora.
Construction of the Paseo de Logroño began on June 2, 1757 by order of Corregidor Lorenzo de Valcarze y Mendoza.
The Municipal Council, in a session of May 10, 1809, agreed to make important improvements to it and also to expand it with neighboring orchards belonging to the Conciliar Seminary and purchased for 42,646 reales de vellón, located on the site of the current Government Delegation.
In 1856, the Municipal Council of Logroño wanted to expand it again by buying six orchards belonging to different owners, who were satisfied with the amount paid of 16,195 reales.
The official name of the Paseo del Espolón is Paseo Príncipe de Vergara according to the Chapter Agreement of February 27, 1872.
In 1979, on the occasion of the first centenary of the death of the general and Prince of Vergara, a monumental sign or prismatic stone placed on the occasion was installed.
