The Palace of the Kings of Navarra in Olite, the Royal Palace of Olite or the Olite Castle is a courtly and military construction erected during the 13th and 14th centuries in the town of Olite.
It was one of the seats of the Court of the Kingdom of Navarre from the reign of Carlos III "the Noble".
It was Carlos III "el Noble" who, in the 15th century, began the expansion of the previous castle, giving rise to the Palace of the Kings of Navarra.
Although almost everyone calls it "castle", the correct thing is to refer to it as "palace", since it is a construction with a courtly character, where the residential aspects prevailed over the military.
One of its main charms is the apparent disorder of its design. This is due to the fact that its construction was never approached as a "joint" project, the final result being due to the continuous expansion and reform works that took place over the centuries, although most of the works were carried out between the end of the 14th century. and early XV.
The complex made up of its rooms, gardens and moats, surrounded by high walls and topped by numerous towers, give it a spectacular and magical silhouette. In its time, it came to be considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.
In it we can clearly differentiate two sets: the Old Palace and the New Palace. Both are separated by "no man's land", a site where the Queen's Palace used to be.
After the invasion of Navarre in 1512 by the unified Crown of Castile and Aragon, the palace deteriorated, as it was only used by the viceroys as a sporadic residence.
The state of abandonment in which the palace was immersed caused it to progressively deteriorate. This process culminated in the fire ordered by the guerrilla Espoz y Mina during the War of Spanish Independence (1813), in fear that Napoleon's French troops would be fortified there.
The current state of the building is the result of a restoration after the call for a competition in 1923 by the Navarra Provincial Council, which was won by the architects José and Javier Yárnoz and which began in 1937.
