Palacio de los Condes de Isla

Juan Fernández de Isla commissioned the regional classicism Palace of the Counts of Isla-Fernández in Isla, Arnuero, near the end of the 17th century.

Juan Fernández de Isla, bishop of Cádiz from 1676 and archbishop of Burgos from 1680, ordered the construction of this enormous residence and rebuilt the parish church where he founded his funeral chapel at the end of the 17th century. He preceded Juan Fernández de Isla, a famous 18th-century Cantabrian who founded the Guarnizo shipyard and many companies under Fernando VI.

A high crenellated fence with circular cubes encloses the location.

The two-story main building has a rectangular floor plan and a south façade with a bell-shaped arch entryway between recessed pilasters and an overhanging balcony flanked by two massive archbishop's coats of arms. Corner cubes display tiny coats of arms. Beyond this volume is a similar recessed building and the private chapel, capped with Herrerian pyramids, in the form of a tower.

The main building is the most common style in Trasmiera in the 17th century, with a closed appearance and a single arcade on the main façade, facing south, usually with a segmental arch, which leads to a tiny portico or hallway with a lintel and the entrance door.

It lacks sills and other components that create volume contrasts or chiaroscuro, and its few, modest openings are decorated sparingly. The Palace of the Acebedo de Hoznayo3 reflects this Habsburg Spanish architecture.

Its many rooms and halls include a big hall and a superb library. It also maintains the most prominent lineage members' painted portraits.
