Museo Casa de Cervantes

The Museo Casa de Cervantes in Valladolid is nothing more and nothing less than the actual house that Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra lived in in 1605. It is located on Calle del Rastro and its entrance is on this street, although the gardens that extend in front of it end in a gate that leads to Calle de Miguel Íscar, which is accessed via the Pasaje de Dulcinea.

This building forms part of a group of five houses erected by Juan de las Navas, the Town Hall's proxy, at the beginning of the 17th century. It is built in brick and its façade has plaster balconies and windows. In the garden were installed the remains of the old façade of the Hospital de la Resurrección, which in Cervantes' time was close to his house and is the setting for one of his Novelas ejemplares, El coloquio de los perros (The Colloquy of the Dogs). In 2005, on the occasion of the 4th centenary of the first edition of Don Quixote de la Mancha, the building and its garden were renovated and cleaned.

Part of the building, as the structure of the building is confused, is the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

It is a Spanish National Museum attached to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, and is managed exclusively by the Directorate General of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage.

It has been known since ancient times that Cervantes had lived in Valladolid for some years and that he had come to Valladolid on business and in connection with the move of the court of Philip III. Cervantes had been a collector of back taxes and commissioner of the Armada; since, according to the same document that allowed the identification of the house, he was visited on business by a Genoese asentist and a Sevillian banker, it can be assumed that he worked in banking, as an accountant. But for centuries it was all supposition and nothing was certain about the exact location of his house. Until the end of the 18th century when the above information was found, which is a remarkable document about Cervantes' life: the exact location of the house he lived in during his stay in the Castilian city could be found out because he and his family are clearly named and the exact location of their home is described, and the lives they all led are clearly and in detail.

The wounded man was transported to the house next to Cervantes', so that all the neighbours of those properties had to come and testify, including Cervantes and his family.
