After many years of neglect, St. Peter's Mount was converted into a park and the military installations rehabilitated as a museum. St. Peter's Mount is now an area to visit and enjoy the scenery and the historic installations, the highlights of which are the two huge guns and the bunkers.
The Vickers parts that make up this battery come from the Barrow-in-Furness Factory in England. They were acquired in 1929 and, after verification and firing tests, were transported by sea to La Coruña. The transfer from the city's port to the San Pedro hill was carried out by means of dismountable rails. Their progress was slow and complicated, only 200 metres a day, due to the size of the guns and the steep slope of the area. After a complex assembly, the first firing took place on 19 December 1933. Since then, they have fired only 19 shots, the last on 24 October 1977.
The two Vickers guns have a calibre of 381 mm and a length of over 17 m. They were capable of firing projectiles weighing one tonne at a range of 38 km. Replicas of the shells can be seen on the promenade in St Peter's Park, each weighing 885 kg. Their incredible range guaranteed almost total protection of the estuaries and coast of Ferrol and La Coruña.
To calculate their shots, the installations were equipped with telemetric stations, a calculating table that obtained the firing data and a tracer table on which the trajectories of the shot and the target were plotted.
It was during the Second World War that these facilities played the most important role. Spain, despite its neutral position, offered support to the Axis Powers. In this situation, with the presence of the guns, the German submarines and Kriegsmarine ships could take refuge and supply themselves in the port of Ferrol or La Coruña without any problem, because the Allied fleet, aware of the range and power of this battery, did not pursue the enemy ships in these waters.
The recovery, by the City Council of A Coruña, of the land and facilities on which it is located not only allows access to the best views of the city and a large park, but also means retaking for the citizens an important part of its history.
