Palace of the Lions

Located on the eastern side of the Comares Palace, the Palace of the Lions occupies the area that once housed the latter's garden. It was built during the second reign of Muhammad V (1362-1391), after he regained the throne through an alliance with the Castilian monarch Pedro I. Covering an area of approximately 1900 square meters, the palace is centered on the Patio de los Leones, from which it takes its name. The rooms are organized around this courtyard, around which are arranged galleries connecting alcoves and private spaces of the sultan and his wives. This palace is an outstanding example of the fusion between architecture and water, where the aquatic element is distributed from the central fountain in the courtyard to all areas of the building. The four clearly distinct organizational areas are located around the galleries: the Mozarabic Hall to the west, the Abencerrajes Hall to the south, the Kings' Hall to the east and the Two Sisters' Hall to the north.
