The Atlantic Botanical Garden of Gijón is a botanical garden of about 25 hectares, located in Cabueñes, Gijón. It is the only botanical garden in Asturias, and is a member of the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens.
It is located two kilometres from Gijón, and was the first of its kind in northwest Spain when it was inaugurated on 25 April 2003. It covers an area of 150,000 square metres, although there are plans to expand it to 250,000 square metres. Within this land, around 30,000 plants of 2,000 different species are catalogued. The garden is divided into four distinct environments, which are the Cantabrian environment, the plant factory, the historical garden of the island and the Atlantic itinerary.
For its creation, Gijón City Council promoted an international competition, and the winner was the multidisciplinary team made up of the Institute of Natural Resources and Territorial Planning of the University of Oviedo, the TAU-Noriega architecture studio, the company INGENIAqed and the landscape designer Ricardo Librero.
The works began in December 2002, after three years of project development, with the participation of the Principality of Asturias and the European Union through the European Social Fund, together with Gijón City Council.
In this botanical garden, a large area is dedicated to different museum and didactic displays, in the form of exhibitions and audiovisuals, such as the Reception Building, the Quintana de Rionda, the Llagar, Finca de la Isla and the Bathing Hut of the Island Garden.
