Once you cross the Golden Gate, you arrive at a large square with an irregular floor plan, where vestiges of ancient buildings are still preserved. Continuing in a straight line from the gate and at the back, you can see the entrance to the atrium of the monastery church, open in the wall that surrounds the third enclosure. It is a 17th century baroque door, ordered to be built by the Duke of Cardona in 1670, which gives access to the atrium or galilee, used in times of strict enclosure to enter the church. On both sides of this door are the statues of San Benito and San Bernardo, complemented by a niche that houses the image of the Virgin. In addition, on its sides there are decorated oculi with abundant baroque ornamentation and Solomonic columns, and in the center of the square, in front of the door, rises the great stone cross of the abbot Guimerá of the XVI century, located on a podium of four steps.
To the north of the square is a chapel of austere style, dedicated in 1251 to Santa Catalina, a work commissioned by Ramón Berenguer IV. This enclosure served as a place of prayer for visitors of honor before accessing the cloistered area and, for many years, guarded the image of the Virgin of the Cypresses. Access to the chapel is through a simple Romanesque door, covered by a pointed barrel vault.
Within the large square there are also other buildings that were once of great importance, such as the inn, located to the south, of which only vestiges remain today. There is also the modern abbey palace, whose building was begun in 1583 by the abbot Francisco Oliver de Boteller, and which was accessed through a corridor or gallery, the work of Genover in 1732, which connected directly with the church; at that time, this palace was located in the middle of the orchards, outside the enclosure. The hospital for the poor, built in 1207 thanks to donations from Bernardo de Granyena, and the old abbey palace, which housed the ladies who were part of the entourage of Isabella the Catholic during her visits to the monastery with her family, are also noteworthy.
