Santiago Church (Ciudad Real)

Santiago Apóstol Church in Ciudad Real (Spain) is a late Romanesque and early Gothic religious building from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1982. Although it is considered a Gothic church with three naves and pointed arches, both its size and hermetic exterior appearance as well as the corbels of the eaves and the Mudejar coffered ceiling, demonstrate its Romanesque tradition and Islamic reminiscences .

It was most probably built, although it has not been documented, on an old hermitage. The land on which it is located was uninhabited in the times when Ciudad Real was not a city, but a small population center called Pozuelo Seco de Don Gil. However, in such times, where the church tower is now located, there would be an advanced tower and defense of the place of contemporary date to the destruction of Alarcos, at the beginning of the 13th century on which the church tower was built. Thus, being the oldest church in the city, it was located in the Jewish quarter, which was filled with Christian population due to the demographic increase that the city experienced since its foundation in 1255 as Villa Real, thus becoming the parish of one of the three collations that formed the city, that of Santiago to the northeast of the city between Toledo and Calatrava streets.

With three naves and pointed arches, in the keystone of the central Gothic apse there is a fresco with eight dragons. In a side chapel we will find the 16th century coat of arms of the Order of Santiago in another fresco. In the keystone of the chapel of the Santísimo Cristo de la Caridad the arms of the Catholic Monarchs are represented. It is worth highlighting a Gothic mural in the Epistle nave with a scene from the Passion of Christ, as well as various capitals with demons and pilgrim figures and shells of Santiago Apóstol in the side naves.

The Camino Manchego de Santiago begins from this church.

In 1985, during some works, its old medieval cemetery appeared and two containers of human bones were filled.
