San Martín de Tours Church

The church of San Martín de Tours is a Catholic temple erected in the second half of the 11th century in Frómista, and located on the Camino de Santiago.

It belongs to the Romanesque style and is considered one of the main prototypes of European Romanesque.

It was built in the second half of the 11th century by order of Doña Mayor de Castilla as part of a monastery of San Martín, which has now disappeared.

The first news in which reference is made to this church date from the year 1066, in which its construction had already begun.

Its style is related to the Romanesque of the Palencia area as well as to the cathedral of Jaca since some of its stonemasons may have worked on this building.

In 1118 it became dependent on the Benedictine priory of San Zoilo, in Carrión de los Condes. The monks abandoned it shortly after, in the 13th century, and gave it to Don Juan Gómez de Manzanedo.

After changing hands on several occasions during the Middle Ages, and after its definitive separation from the monastery, the church underwent various additions during the 15th century: a tower that would serve as a bell tower on the original dome, and several rooms that served as a sacristy.

After these latest medieval news, the temple suffered a progressive deterioration, which led to it being declared unsuitable for worship at the end of the 19th century. After its closure, the deterioration accelerates, with several landslides in the vault and the walls.

Several reports issued during this time reflect the worrying state of the building that threatened ruin. The work of restoring the temple begins shortly after its declaration as a National Monument in 1894.

The restoration work is in the hands of the architect Manuel Aníbal Álvarez Amoroso, who intends to return the temple to its original state, eliminating later additions. The most deteriorated capitals and corbels were transferred to the Archaeological Museum of Palencia, and replaced by reproductions.

The reconstruction tasks ended in 1904, when it was finally reopened to the public.

In 2010, maintenance and restoration work was carried out on the stained glass windows.
