Faro de Maspalomas

The Maspalomas lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the island of Gran Canaria that is responsible for marking the southern coasts of the island for maritime navigation, on the coastline that extends from the area covered by the Punta de Arinaga lighthouse, to the northeast, and the Punta del Castillete lighthouse, located to the northwest.

This lighthouse is a construction conceived by the engineer Juan León y Castillo as a luminous complex made up of two main bodies, the keeper's house and the tower. The rectangular-shaped house was developed from a traditional idea such as the Canarian patio, but the four facades of the property are helped by the eclectic fashion of the period in which it was built. The house, attached to the base of the tower, acts as a plinth that counteracts its thrusts.

The decision to build a lighthouse in Maspalomas dates from 1861 but it was not until 1884 when Juan de León y Castillo was commissioned to draft the project. The works lasted until 1889 and the lighthouse emitted its first luminous flash on the night of its commissioning, on February 1, 1890.

It is fully automated and works using conventional electrical energy connected to the public grid.

It has annexed units at the foot of the tower, in a two-storey eclectic-style building. This building is attached to the tower on its north side and it is a rectangular and symmetrical construction in the arrangement of its doors and windows, whose perimeters are outlined in stonework. Its corners and a cornice that finishes off its entire upper part also make use of the ashlar to harmonize the whole. Above the entrance to the building we find a small balcony in tea wood and inside a patio serves as a distributor to give access to all the rooms and to the tower itself. In them are the different dependencies, warehouses and room that the lighthouse keeper had; as well as a generator set and the corresponding batteries to guarantee operation in the event of disconnection or failure in the electrical network.
