This iconic market, known in Turkish as Mısır Çarşısı, or "Egyptian Bazaar," welcomes us with its centuries-old charm in the vibrant Eminönü neighborhood. Prepare to step into a unique sensory experience!
The origin of the bazaar's name takes us back through the centuries. Some say it is due to the exotic spices arriving from the East, while others suggest that during the Byzantine Empire, this place was a bustling grain trading center.
Built under the order of Sultan Turhan between the years 1663 and 1664, this architectural treasure was designed by the renowned Koca Kasım Ağa Kasım, and completed by the talented architect Mustafa. It is part of the Yeni Camii Mosque complex, along with a variety of stores, a historic cemetery, two beautiful fountains and a school that tells stories of bygone eras.
As you explore this labyrinth of corridors, you will discover its peculiar "L" shape. The short side, 120 meters long, runs perpendicular to the mosque, while the long side, 150 meters long, is aligned parallel to it. Here, you will find a total of 88 stores, each with its own history and merchandise to discover.
From fragrant spices to exquisite Turkish sweets, colorful handicrafts to elegant textiles, the Spice Bazaar offers a feast for the senses and a window into Istanbul's rich cultural heritage.
