Ermita de San Saturio

The hermitage of San Saturio is located in the Spanish city of Soria, in the province of the same name.

It is popularly considered, in its scenic enclave, one of the most beautiful places in the city.

It is believed that the Templars of San Polo monopolized access to the Peñalba cave on which the hermitage of San Miguel de la Peña was built; In tradition, it is said that the Visigoth anchorite San Saturio, patron saint of the city of Soria, lived there, under whose dedication the temple has been since the 16th century and that, curiously, it repeats the archetypal octagonal structure of the Temple.

Initially the remains of San Saturio rested in this cave on top of which the hermitage was built, but when the religious building was built they were moved to the main altar of the temple.

The current hermitage was built at the end of the seventeenth century, hanging over the rocky area next to the Duero, "with outstanding self-confidence and courage and seeking an incomparable visual impact for all future generations," says Gaya Nuño.

The architect was Pedro de Ajín, in the middle of the Baroque period, although the hermitage is sober in terms of stone, not in regard to its altarpieces and paintings, where the exultant Baroque is in its fullness.

According to legend, when Saturio had been living for thirty years in the cave in which the hermitage is located, he saw a young man (named Prudencio) who was trying to swim across the river and began to warn him of the danger of the action . When everyone expected the young man to be drowned by the current, he made it safely to shore. What's more, they didn't even get their clothes wet. The young man climbed to the top of those cliffs to request the hermit's blessing, and incidentally, ask permission to stay and live with him.
