Elogio del Horizonte

In Praise of the Horizon is the name of a concrete sculpture by the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. It is a work of great proportions erected in 1990 on the Cerro de Santa Catalina, and is considered a symbol of the city. It is popularly known as "King Kong's toilet".

The location of the sculpture was suggested to Mayor Vicente Álvarez Areces by the architect Paco Pol, who was in charge of the remodelling of the Cerro de Santa Catalina in the Cimadevilla neighbourhood of Gijón. Chillida made several small scale models in steel and wood until he came up with the final shape of the sculpture. From one of these designs, he began the execution of the work, which started with the construction of a life-size expanded polystyrene model in an industrial building in Hernani. This model was used to build around it, with the help of Bereciartúa's carpentry team, the pinewood structure or formwork that would serve as a mould for the fresh concrete. After marking the wooden slats, this structure was taken to Gijón and reassembled piece by piece on the Cerro de Santa Catalina. There, a metal frame was placed to support the weight of the concrete that forms the sculpture: 500 tonnes.
