As you may know, Ramón Otero Pedrayo was born in Ourense in 1888 and died in 1976, aged 88. He was one of the most prominent members of the Xeración Nós, the best articulated and most ambitious cultural project in Galicia before the Civil War. As a writer, Otero Pedrayo wrote novels, essays, hundreds of newspaper articles, plays and dozens of poems. He was also a tireless orator.
He was a member of parliament in the Constituent Cortes of 1931 and a lecturer at the University of Santiago de Compostela between 1950 and 1958. After the years of silence and internal exile forced by the war, he presided over the Galaxia publishing house, with which he opened the doors of the slow Galician cultural recovery in the post-war period.
As you can see, this is a large farmhouse and not a pazo. The cultivation of the land and the management of the properties were, for years, the family's main livelihood. We can say that the writer was born into a well-to-do, cultured and liberal family. Enrique Otero Sotelo, his father, was a doctor; his paternal grandfather had been a soldier; and his maternal grandfather, a lawyer. His ancestors included men of law, politicians, scribes and religious men, but not noblemen.
