The Círculo Oscense building, also known as the Casino de Huesca (Spain), was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is one of the most significant works carried out in Huesca at that time. The project was commissioned to the Catalan architect Ildefonso Bonells in 1901. It is the best example of modernist architecture in this city and it brings together different urban and architectural aspects that make it a relevant piece of Aragonese architecture.
The building is a unique piece in the Plaza Navarra and its setback from the building line creates a transitional space occupied by a terrace. The volume is symmetrical with respect to the axis of the main façade and is configured by the addition of simple geometric bodies along its transversal axis. It consists of a large central body crowned by a pediment, with a smaller body attached to each of its sides and four octagonal towers at the corners. The whole has the character of a castle-fortress, reinforced by the solidity of its construction.
On the outside, the volumetry is unified by the white colour of the façades and the different compositional elements. In the elevations, the symmetrical composition forms a linear framework that blurs the demarcation between full and empty spaces. The elegant modernist and secessionist decoration is combined with historicist ornamentation. In the interiors, and responding to a desire for integrative design, it is worth mentioning the furniture and decoration in keeping with the taste of the period.
For the people of Huesca, the building of the Círculo Oscense, also known as the Casino, has a great symbolic value, since it has been enjoyed by successive generations and currently depends on the Círculo Oscense Foundation, a public and municipal foundation created in 1982.
